The pencil - A critical item onboard
I was struggling a bit to come up with a topic for this newsletter, then I
read a fascinating article which was published in The New Yorker magazine

    I did not see this article until after the article I wrote for the
2009 Ocean Voyager issue of Ocean Navigator that was recently published.
Most of you probably have this issue, if not, make sure to run right out to
the newsstand and buy it.
    There are a lot of parallels in the two articles which I thought I
would point out in this newsletter, and also extend the concept a bit to
make the point that perhaps the most critical piece of gear you can bring
aboard as you set out on your voyages this spring and summer is none other
than the pencil.

voyages. It's that period eagerly awaited by voyagers when conditions are
right to leave harbor and begin a passage, whether it's a short hop or an

About the Author:

KenMcKinley earned a bachelor's degree in atmospheric science from
CornellUniversity in 1980, and attended graduate school in meteorology at
theMassachusetts Institute of Technology. After working as a
meteorologistfor nearly 10 years for a large private consulting firm
inMassachusetts, he founded his own meteorological consulting firm,
LocusWeather, in Camden, Maine in 1991. A large portion of his business
atLocus Weather involves providing custom weather forecast services
foroceangoing yachts, both racers and cruisers. Ken serves as aninstructor
for the Ocean Navigator School of Seamanship, and also as anadjunct
instructor at the STAR Centers for Professional MaritimeOfficers in Dania,
Fla., and Toledo, Ohio, and for MITAGS in Baltimore,Md. He has also taught
meteorology at Maine Maritime Academy. Heresides in Rockport, Maine with
his wife and two sons.

Fortunately, <img style="margin: 6px 6px 6px 0px;" width="200" height="271" align="left" src="https://app.icontact.com/icp/loadimage.php/mogile/179770/48692a6b4985d768c440a461deea1a4f/image/jpeg" alt="" title="">Geert, my husband Con's brother, arrived from the Netherlands the last day of September armed with some sailing experience and a wish to cross a big body of water. I, too, was looking forward to the experience, having successfully handled <i>Big Sky</i> in some pretty rough conditions, both in the Baltic and in the North Sea during a few stormy night passages. Little did I know this was not to be my shining moment. <br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Had we known that our Canadian friends in their home-made 42-foot sail boat had been knocked down in a storm that swept across the Bay of Biscay, would we have made a crossing of the bay famous for its storms and rough seas? They left a day ahead of us and met with the full-force of the gale; we received the tail-end. Thirty years ago we took our first year-long voyage - including the crossing of 2,200 miles of open ocean from San Francisco to Hawaii and a 2,500-mile return trip - in our 31-foot Mariner ketch. For navigation we used a sextant, a mechanical log line, and paper charts. We had ice to cool our beer and fresh vegetables for the first four or five days. For safety we relied on our eyes: our boat had no radar, no radar alert system, no radar reflector, no EPIRB, no GPS.<br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; On that first major voyage, our boat was equipped with a single 110-amp deep-cycle battery. That battery powered everything electrical aboard the boat, including the starter on the Perkins 4-108 diesel. We had no facility for charging that battery except for the wimpy 55-amp alternator on the engine that began reducing output within minutes after we started up. Yet we didn't feel electrically deprived. Typically, long-distance voyaging boats are crewed by a couple or a family, perhaps with the assistance of a friend or two. As I contemplate the 23rd season sailing our 34-foot sloop, Antigone, I realize that we have evolved a rather different model for our adventures. During the last two decades, Antigone has sailed from New York to Nain, Newfoundland, spending three seasons in Labrador and cruising Newfoundland (from our base in Marblehead, Mass.) four times.<br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; We have done this with modest incomes and without quitting our jobs, or even taking a sabbatical. We&rsquo;ve developed a collective approach to voyaging that makes this possible.
